Band 8 Accelerator · Your Free Writing Fix

Your Primary Writing Bottleneck

Why Your Vocabulary Is
Capping Your Band Score

Your diagnostic identified Lexical Resource as the criterion holding your Writing band back. Here is exactly why — and the three fixes that work immediately.

Why this costs you marks: Lexical Resource is assessed on range, precision, and appropriateness — not just how many advanced words you use. Candidates who rely on a safe, familiar vocabulary set are capped below Band 7 even when everything else is correct. And candidates who attempt sophisticated words but use them incorrectly score even lower. The standard IELTS is looking for is precise, contextually appropriate, and naturally varied.

Three Fixes. One Higher Band.

These three changes will be visible in your very next essay.

1
Paraphrase the question in your introduction — never repeat it

Using the exact words from the question prompt in your introduction is the fastest way to signal limited Lexical Resource. Examiners notice this in the first two sentences. Paraphrasing every key concept — using your own vocabulary rather than the question's — immediately signals a higher band. This is also where the greatest LR gains are available, because you are changing something that takes five seconds per essay.

✖ Repeating the prompt — LR penalty
"Technology has made life easier for many people. In this essay, I will discuss whether technology has made life easier and give my opinion on this topic."
✔ Fully paraphrased — LR signal
"Digital advancement has undeniably transformed the routines of daily existence. In this essay, I will examine the extent to which this transformation has genuinely improved human experience, and argue that while the gains are real, they are distributed unevenly across socioeconomic groups."
2
Learn collocations — not just vocabulary

The difference between Band 6 and Band 7 vocabulary is often not the words themselves but how they are combined. Collocation — knowing which words naturally go together — cannot be guessed, it must be learned. Many Nigerian candidates know the right nouns but pair them with the wrong verbs or adjectives. Examiners call this "errors in word choice" and it directly reduces your LR score even when the intended meaning is clear.

3
Build a personal upgrade list for your most over-used words

Every candidate has 6–10 words they over-rely on. Identify yours and build an upgrade list of 3 alternatives for each — alternatives you are confident using correctly. The goal is not to sound academic. It is to demonstrate that your vocabulary naturally ranges across different levels of precision. Variety without accuracy lowers your score. Targeted upgrading raises it.
